Parent Visa FAQs
What is the difference between contributory and non-contributory parent visas?
Contributory parent visas (143/173) require significantly higher government fees but process faster (2-4 years). Non-contributory visas (103) have lower fees but processing takes 12+ years. Both lead to permanent residence.
What is the balance of family test?
At least half of your children must be Australian citizens or permanent residents living in Australia, or more of your children live in Australia than in any other country. This test must be met at application time.
What is an Assurance of Support (AoS)?
An AoS is a legal commitment where the sponsor agrees to repay Centrelink for certain social security payments made to the parent. It requires a bank guarantee (currently $10,000 per adult, $4,000 per child) held for 10 years.
Can my parents work on a parent visa?
Yes. Once granted a permanent parent visa (143, 103, 864, or 884), your parents have full work rights in Australia and can access Medicare.
